Massey Ferguson: Back in the Family

Shawn Shelton jumped back into Massey Ferguson at his first chance.

When Shawn Shelton found a Massey Ferguson® dealer near his cattle farm in the Arkansas Ozarks, he fell in love with the tractors. He bought one, “and I about wore it out,” he says. But his dealer—who had become a close friend—passed away. By the time Shawn was ready for an upgrade, there was nowhere locally to buy one.

Then, in 2017, Shawn caught wind of a rumor: Grass Roots Equipment and Outdoors, a new Massey Ferguson dealer, had opened nearby in Batesville, Arkansas. He called the dealership up, then traded his existing equipment for an MF6713—a heavy-duty Global Series tractor with a powerful 3-point-hitch lift capacity of 9,390 pounds.

It’s a workhorse of a machine. The AGCO Power™ 4-cylinder, 4.4L engine revs up to 130 HP, more than enough to lug his hefty baler or haul his 20-foot rotary mower. The 3-point hitch makes it a cinch to switch between tasks. Yet, there is no sacrifice in comfort. A Deluxe Cab comes standard, featuring a steering column that adjusts automatically, a nimble mechanical-swivel seat and plenty of room. “I’m sort of a big guy,” Shawn says. “I like that big, wide cab.”

Shawn likes good service, too, which is what he gets from Bill Miller and the team at Grass Roots, he says. If he needs replacement parts, “they’re on it in a hurry.” On a farm like Shawn’s, with 1,600 acres of hay fields and 250 cows spread across three counties, that speed is essential. “Rain may be coming in tomorrow, and you’ve got to get that hay field baled today. They understand that,” he says of the staff at Grass Roots.

Power, comfort, versatility, good service—it’s a combination that makes Shawn happy to be “back in the family,” he says. And it’s got him contemplating just which Massey Ferguson equipment will be the next addition to his fleet.
